Frequently Asked Questions

Learn more about our doula services, team, and how we support families.

1. Where do you provide services?
We serve families throughout New Jersey and the NYC metro area, with both in-person and virtual support options available. See the full list of hospitals and birth centers we’ve worked with here.
2. What's the difference between a doula and a midwife?
A midwife is a medical professional who provides clinical care, while a doula offers emotional, educational, and physical support. We do not provide medical care or make medical decisions, but we complement your provider’s care. Midwives are medical professionals and can fill the role of an OB/GYN in caring for a low-risk pregnancy. Doulas are not medical professionals. We provide emotional, mental, and physical support before, during, and after childbirth. Think of us as a birth and parenting coach. We're here to prepare you for your journey into parenthood but do not replace the role of a midwife or a doctor.
3. What qualifications do the doulas on your team have?
Our doulas are professionally trained, many with certifications in birth, postpartum, lactation, and other specialties. Some are registered nurses, changemakers within maternal health policy, therapists, counselors, midwifery students, herbalists, and more. We also provide continuing education and mentorship to ensure families receive high-quality, evidence-based care.
4. I have a great relationship with my provider and my partner plans to support me. Can I still benefit from a birth doula?
Absolutely! Doulas enhance the support you already have by offering continuous care, comfort measures, and advocacy tools. Having the support of a doula during childbirth contributes to a more well-rounded and integrative circle of support within your birth space. Midwives and doctors usually are not present the entire time during labor and delivery. They tend to check in on you every few hours until it's time to get the baby out of your belly. Doulas are the only professionals who provide continuous support throughout the entire time you're in active labor until after your baby is in your arms. Many partners appreciate how doulas help them feel more confident and involved.
5. Do doulas only provide support at homebirths?
No. We support families in all birth settings: hospitals, birth centers, and homes. Wherever you give birth, your doula is there for you, as long as there is a licensed health care provider present.
6. What's the difference between a postpartum doula, night nurse, and newborn care specialist?
Postpartum doulas focus on the whole family’s well-being. Our postpartum doulas are well-versed in supporting parents emotionally, with breastfeeding, and implementing systems and routines within the household, things that are usually out of scope for night nurses and newborn care specialists. Night nurses and newborn care specialists typically focus on just on caring for the baby.
7. Do you provide childbirth education?
Yes! We offer modern, interactive childbirth education classes that go beyond the basics, covering advocacy, comfort measures, and what to really expect during labor. All of our clients also have access to on-demand videos via Tinyhood.
8. Do you accept insurance?
While most insurance plans don’t cover doula services directly, some families use HSA/FSA funds or employer benefits. We also provide invoices you can submit for potential reimbursement. We also have many clients pay for services with employer-sponsored benefits, such as Maven, Cleo, and Progyny.
9. Can your team help me with breastfeeding?
Yes. Many of our doulas are trained in lactation support, and we can also connect you with board-certified lactation consultants if needed.
10. Do you have doulas who share cultural or language backgrounds with clients?
Yes. Our diverse team includes doulas who identify as Black, Latina, bilingual (including Spanish), and more. We aim to match families with doulas who can connect on shared identity and lived experience when requested.
11. When should I book a doula?
We recommend booking as early as possible—many families secure a doula in the second trimester. This ensures availability and allows you to build a strong relationship before birth.
12. How do postpartum doula hours work?
You can book hourly packages with flexible scheduling. We offer daytime and overnight shifts, tailored to your family’s needs and routines.
13. Will a doula replace my partner’s role?
Not at all. Doulas enhance a partner’s role, offering guidance and support so partners feel more confident and involved.
14. What if my labor is long or ends in a cesarean?
Your doula supports you no matter how birth unfolds—whether labor is quick, long, or ends in surgery. We provide continuous emotional support before, during, and after birth.
15. How do I get matched with the right doula?
After your consultation, we recommend doulas who best fit your needs, preferences, and personality. Our goal is to ensure a supportive match that feels right for your family.
